Vs the first batter of the inning
0.360 AVG / 0.429 OBP / 0.640 SLG / 1.069 OPS / 0.350 BAbip
In general when he has nobody on base (That 0.305 alone is better than what any NYY regular is batting).
0.305 AVG / 0.397 OBP/ 0.486 SLG / 0.882 OPS / 0.315 BAbip
He suffers what i would call the Javy Vázquez syndrome, which is that whenever the Yanks score runs, the pitcher will immediately give back runs or the lead (something AJ is beginning to show).
He simply is not cut out to pitch under pressure, he stinks, and it is not because he doesn't throw strikes, it is because he is afraid of throwing strikes and when he throws strikes batters are waiting to sit in his fastball: with men on base he has 2.33 Ks per walk, with nobody on he has 0.80 Ks per walk (15 walks, 12 Ks), he is affraid to put runners on base but ends up doing it anyway with his picky pitching.
- a) The yanks don't seem too thrilled to promote Carlos Silva and see if he is any better than Nova;
- b) JoeG will keep on using a set of pitchers for games he thinks is gonna lose, Logan has pitched in 13 Yankee loses this year, and 6 yankee wins this season. And he stinks vs LHB who are batting a fat 0.361 AVG against him, so it is no surprise also that JoeG will use him when he THINKS the NYY are either losing, tied with risk of losing or about to give up the lead.
And those are not just the only problems this team has right now:
- a) JoeG doesn't notice that Posada, Swisher, Cervelli, Gardner are struggling (yeah Gardner is hitting 0.319 in May but mainly because he has had various multihit games in this month, in total he has a hit in 16 of 26 games in may, while Jeter for example who is batting 0.263 during May has 19 games with a hit out of 25 he has played, has less AVG but has more hits and has been productive in more games than Gardner);
- b) JoeG doesn't play with strategy, you won't see him sending a squeeze play;
- c) Núñez is BAD fielding and running the bases. Gardner is bad running the bases (he can't steal if a pitcher throws to first a couple of times), but Núñez its not only bad, he is also dumb and has LOTS of errors, makes more errors than what he produces on the field;
- d) JoeG seems affraid to use the WORST player in the lineup lower than 7th. Yeah, Posada, he scared Girardi when he tried to put him at 9th;
- e) JoeG needs to ask Cashman to call to the big leagues players that could be helping the team win instead of calling up mediocre AAA players with a 0.250 batting average and no power at all, last year we had the same with Peña, Núñez, Golson, Russo, Miranda, Winn. This year he has "el chato" in the minor leagues and they don't want to call him up... he would certainly be an upgrade over Posada who is batting 0.170. And Montero would be an upgrade over Cervelli who not only can't block balls, he also makes too many mistakes throwing and with wild pitches and passed balls that are scored wild pitches by the official scorer. They need to take Swisher out of the lineup, get Posada out of there, send Gardner to the bench, and have a good catcher in the bench for whenever Girardi with a double change ends up with no players and ready to break the DH rule.
The bad news is that its like the Yankees front office seems to regard Montero as a good rookie with trade potential that could net the Yanks a good player. So they are unwilling to call him up at least until after July 31st deadline passes by and he is not traded by garbage with a high contract (a-la-Javy-Vázquez), it seems more and more like they don't want to risk to diminish his value. And as for Vázquez, Girardi has never liked good players that could outperform his millionaire friends in the team. In 2010 he didn't like Jon Weber, by far the best and most dedicated player during spring training and sent him to the minors knowing that Nick Johnson injuries even with a wink of an eye... end result? Nick injuried and the yanks replaced him with mediocre minor leaguers.
I tought JoeT was bad and nothing could be worse... but JoeG is even worse, too stubborn, too stupid to know or recognize he doesn't know squat about stats, too stupid to know how to handle his pitchers (now the NYY starting pitchers are 6 inning pitchers because he thinks he has the 1996 version of Mariano and a phenomenal closer like Wetteland, when he instead has 2011 Mariano and a fat Joba setting him up).
But the blame is also on the writers and journalists that don't criticize JoeG face to face and instead will only say and ask things like parrots: "how do you feel?"; "what was the key to winning/losing this game?"; "what were your thoughts when X did X?". Reporters now are not fans of the team, they couldn't care less, they do their job which is to record what the manager and a player said and that's all, they don't know about stats, they don't know what the fans think nor want to know, they in fact are rooting for other teams while their job in the Yanks is to say stupid things every game during the 5th inning.
